The extraction/pour should take you about 25 seconds. If it takes less than 20 seconds, it will most probably be too coarse, leaving you with too little crema. And if it takes more than 30 seconds, the grind will be too fine, leaving you with an uneven dark crema. 

 In other words, if your grind takes less than 20 seconds, you will end up with weak-tasting coffee, and if it takes more than 30 seconds, the coffee will be bitter. Your target should be between 23 and 28 seconds. 

The milk should be smooth, silky, but make sure that it is not too hot. If you use boiling hot milk in this step, you will likely ruin the coffee. The ideal temperature for the milk should be between 65 and 70 degrees Celsius. 

When pouring the milk, make sure that it is still moving. If the milk has stopped swirling, then give it a few swirls before you pour. This will ensure that the milk does not separate and stays thick and silky. Now let us look at a few homemade espresso recipes and some espresso drink recipe ideas.

#1: Latte 

Latte is prepared with a single shot of espresso in a cup filled to top with velvety smooth milk. As the coffee settles, you are left with a foam, about your finger’s width.

#2: Flat White 

The ratio of the milk and espresso is the main difference between a flat white and a latte. The flat white has less milk compared to the latte. This means the foam formed at the top is lesser than that of a latte. This also makes flat white taste stronger than a latte. The amount of espresso remains the same. 

#3: Cappuccino 

A cappuccino has a foam similar to that of a latte. Then you can sprinkle some chocolate on top. For other espresso drink flavor recipes ideas, you can sprinkle ground cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla powder, or powdered cocoa. If you want to make dry cappuccino, add more foam than usual. #5: Deluxe Iced Coffee 

Begin with one teaspoon of castor sugar and two shots of espresso. Add two ice cubes and wait for them to cool down. Use a tall glass and add a teaspoon of honey. Drip it through the sides of the glass.

 Add the ice cubes (which may have probably melted) and the espresso into the glass. Add a drop of vanilla extract and two scoops of vanilla ice cream. Finally, top it with milk before serving the deluxe iced coffee with a long spoon. Finding espresso replacement in recipes is tough, but you can do that with deluxe iced coffee.

#6: Doppio 

Doppio is just a double shot of espresso. Be sure to use raw sugar for a fuller taste. It tastes better than when you use white sugar.

#7: Short Black

A short black is just one shot of espresso but served in a small glass or cup. It’s pretty simple to make and tastes good when you are a fan of strong coffee.

#8: Café Cubano 

Cuban coffee is recognized for its strong taste, and it is very popular in Cuba and some places in the United States. The coffee is often served after meals. 

To make this type of coffee, pour ice-cold water into your Nespresso coffee machine and fill it with coffee beans. Place two and a half teaspoons of sugar into your cup, and when the coffee starts percolating, pour some into the cup to moisten the sugar and make a paste.

When your coffee finishes brewing, slowly pour a little into the cup and gently mix it with the sugar paste. Once the foam is formed, add the rest of the coffee and enjoy it.

#9: Macchiato 

A macchiato is an espresso that has little amount of milk on top. It has a small touch of milk and a strong espresso flavor. Traditionally, a macchiato does not need a foam on it.

A long black is just a double shot of coffee. It is usually topped up with boiling hot water about your finger’s width from the top of flat porcelain or ceramic cup. Some people use one coffee shot, but a double shot gives the coffee a bit more crema.
